Five Hundred Days before the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 COB unveils the sculpture #SOMOS TIME BRASIL (WE ARE TIME BRASIL)

The countdown has now started. With 500 days remaining until the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, Olympic sport fans have now an additional motivation to cheer for Time Brasil. In a ceremony attended by Brazilian sport stars, the sculpture # SOMOS TIME BRASIL was unveiled by the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) on Tuesday, March 03, at Marina da Glória, in Rio de Janeiro. The installation was unveiled by nine athletes present at the ceremony.

At the opening of the event, COB vice-president Marco La Porta, talked about COB actions to prepare and form the green and yellow delegation that will be competing on the other side of the world 500 days from today. “Our purpose with this action is to share with the general public and our athletes the beginning of the countdown for the Olympic Games. We are aware that time will fly during these 500 days. And, this is why we are working so hard. Our teams have been working on logistics planning well in advance, even before Rio 2016, to offer the best conditions possible to our athletes. We know many challenges lie ahead at the Tokyo Games: culture, cuisine, the distance. But our six bases in Japan are already being tested so that, on arrival, the athletes will only need to think about their sport performance”, COB vice-president says.

Besides La Porta, the event was attended by COB general director, Rogério Sampaio, sport director, Jorge Bichara, Communication and Marketing director Manoela Penna, and a team of national sport stars, like the Olympic champions Torben Grael (sailing), Jackie Silva (beach volleyball) and Giovane Gávio (volleyball). Robson Caetano (athletics), bronze medal at Seoul 88 and Atlanta 96, Ágatha Rippel (beach volleyball) silver medal at Rio 2016 Games, Ana Marcela Cunha (swimming marathon) four-times World Circuit champion and Marcelinho Machado (basketball) three-times Pan American champion were also present. Side by side with them the new generation of Brazilian sport was represented by Guilherme Costa (swimming) an Gabriela Nicolino (sailing).

“By the end of the Olympic Games Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020 became our main focus. The 500 milestone is a date we must celebrate but the competition for an Olympic slot is already underway. Mine is July 14 and I’m preparing for that. I had the opportunity to go to Japan, to Sagamihara, and I was able check and, our preparation. Time Brasil is really concerned with offering the best comfort to the athletes, making us feel at home, with meals we are used to, with the best structure possible”, reported Ana Marcela, who used the opportunity to call upon fans to support the Brazilian athletes. “Be sure to use the social media to celebrate with us. I hope the fans will send us positive energy, words of support, because this really makes a difference and, more than ever, in 2020 when we will be on the other side of the world, the swimmer added.

Over five meters wide and two meters tall, the green, yellow and blue installation #SOMOS TIME BRASIL will enable the general public to join an athlete encouragement and support campaign. Simultaneously to the unveiling at Marina da Glória, the installation will also be on display at Bangu Shopping of group Aliansce, an Official Supporter of Time Brasil.

“I’ve worked hard to be able to enter the Olympic Games and I did it when my career is coming to an end. This is the most important achievement ever for any athlete. It sounds like a lot, but 500 days go by in the blink of an eye and support from fans is critical to all athletes. In the last edition of the Games the fans were really close to use, at home. Now, we will be far away, on the other side of the world. So, having the fans with us on social media will be very important. Let all fans use the hashtag to send their videos, their messages, because this will represent an additional encouragement to the athletes”, Marcelinho Machado commented.
